Chapter Twelve: Partners
"Heh, so your name is Gu Ziqi. I'll remember you — wait, *what?*" Jin Lanzhi threatened on reflex, but before she could finish the words, something jolted her back to her senses. She let out a piercing shriek, eyes bulging so wide they looked ready to fall clean out of their sockets.
Gu Ziqi
The young miss of the Gu family from the Imperial Capital?
Boom!
Just five brief words.
Yet they fell like five muffled thunderclaps resounding in every ear, leaving the entire crowd utterly dumbfounded.
"You…" Xiao Rulong was stunned.
"What?" Huangfu Hai's forehead was instantly covered in beads of sweat.
"You are…" Huangfu Qing's face drained of color as well, her beauty eclipsed by sudden pallor.
"Hm?" Ye Fusheng froze as well, slowly turning his head to look at Gu Ziqi. She was Gu Ziqi?
Wasn't she just a canary kept in a cage by Cai Chongyang? Was she truly nothing more than a kept woman?
Gu Ziqi stepped forward once more, concealing herself no longer, and gave full display to the commanding presence of a young mistress from a great clan.
Looking at Jin Lanzhi, she said, "Am I even worthy?"
Jin Lanzhi was frightened into tears. She retreated to her husband's side, not daring to raise her head again, and trembled out: "I—I—I—a match, a perfect match—it is I who am unworthy."
Huangfu Qing turned to face everyone once more. "Who dares let him die!"
Boom!
Once again, waves of muffled thunder rumbled through everyone's minds, and their breathing grew unsteady. Director Wang, who had been standing to the side all along, was so frightened that he crumpled to the ground.
Everyone instinctively distanced themselves from Xiao Rulong and Huangfu Hai.
"I… I… I…" Huangfu Hai stammered for a long while, unable to find the words. Though he was the wealthiest man in Tianhai City, before the Gu family, he was nothing but small—far too small.
Never in a million years would anyone have expected that the woman by Ye Fusheng's side could actually be Gu Ziqi!
Xiao Rulong was on the verge of tears: "Miss Gu, as the saying goes, a father who fails to teach bears the blame. All of this is my fault. This Xu is willing to accept any beating or punishment—only… could you first release my son, so that he may kneel before you and beg your forgiveness?"
Her son was still in Ye Fusheng's clutches — nearly dead!
"Heh heh…"
Gu Ziqi let out a cold laugh. Though she had her clan's backing, she had no desire to stir up trouble at their very first meeting.
She turned to look at Ye Fusheng, her imposing aura instantly fading as she reverted to her gentle sister-in-law demeanor: "Fusheng, let him go. He's not worth dirtying your hands."
These words set everyone's hearts pounding wildly — just what kind of relationship did those two have?!
"Uh... alright."
Ye Fusheng was still in a daze. She was Gu Ziqi? Just what kind of marriage arrangement had that rotten old man saddled him with?
The first fiancée, arrogant and self-righteous, took the initiative to break off the engagement.
The Second Fiancée, a Sickly Girl, Holds a Public Husband Selection.
The third fiancée — insatiably greedy, or merely a canary kept in someone else's cage.
There was no telling whether the remaining six fiancées were equally bizarre.
Xiao Tianyou could finally breathe again. Gone was any trace of his lofty, imperious young-master image—he was hunched on the ground, retching uncontrollably, gastric acid and yellow bile splattered across the floor.
Xiao Rulong strode over and delivered two savage kicks to Xiao Tianyou. "You still have the nerve to vomit? Kowtow and apologize to Miss Gu this instant. If you can't earn her forgiveness, I'll personally break your legs."
Xiao Tianyou dared not resist, and quickly dropped to his knees in apology: "I was wrong, I was wrong."
Xiao Rulong fawned once more: "Miss Gu, my worthless son had eyes yet failed to recognize your true worth. He simply admires you far too greatly and was too eager to help you resolve certain matters — I do hope you won't take offense."
"Mr. Ye, I fear I gave much offense just now. I humbly ask for your forgiveness."
Ye Fusheng smiled with cold indifference. The purpose of his visit today was to dissolve the engagement.
Gu Ziqi seemed not to have heard, and turned to Ye Fusheng again: "Fusheng, wait here for now. I'm going to change."
She had originally planned to change her clothes at the Cloud-Peak Heavenly Palace, but Ye Fusheng had returned.
"Good!"
Ye Fusheng replied tersely: too many people here, it was inconvenient. They would wait until the banquet ended and break off the engagement in private.
After Gu Ziqi left, the banquet hall instantly erupted into an uproar.
